Uche Sparks Comfortable Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting very quickly. Without star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that all but guarantees them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be enough to secure direct passage to the last 16, particularly after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for some of Palace's fringe players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season were outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Dominance Established from the Start
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee dismissed the protests.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, indicating there is still room for improvement in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
